When May Employers Run Background Checks?

Criminal Background Checks

The State of California allows employers and employment agencies to register for a regular account with the California Department of Justice that will not only provide the employer or agency with a history of arrests, convictions and other information, but will notify the employer or agency if the employee is arrested (what are called "Subsequent Arrest Notifications").

California and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history checks must begin with a fingerprint scan that is taken in person - what is called "Live Scan."  The California Department of Justice provides a webpage with a locator of the Live Scan locations nearest the address you enter.  You can search for Live Scan locations in California by clicking here.
